Metal Wings

She walks around
She sheds her tears
But people laugh
They don’t care about her fears.
Because the world is cruel
Tears become tears.
She knows just as good
As everyone else
And sometimes
She swears she has wings.

But her wings are made of metal
They shine but hold her down.
Keeping up appearances
Will glue her to the ground.

If only she could see
The ones who tell her
She’s not
The things she wishes she could be
Don’t matter.
If only she could know
The world will pull you down
Just to see
If you’re strong enough to get back up.

It’s a new day
She’s found a new way.
She’s shed her wings.
She doesn’t shine anymore
But her eyes are filled with new light.
Her smile’s come back,
She stands straight and tall
And she’s come to find
She didn’t need those wings at all

She walks around
She saves her tears
People still laugh
People still don’t care about her fears
But she’s found
Neither does she.

It’s okay to take a leap
To break a border
To wake those asleep
To show the world
There’s beauty beyond the wings.
It took a time
To finally find
Without the weight
She feels beautiful again
Like when she was younger
And the world sees
And the world sees she’s strong enough to get back up again.
And the world sees beauty
In strength.
